The Chicago Independent Radio Project is working to secure a broadcast license for a new community radio station in Chicago that is committed to local, independent programming, and generally furthering the causes of localism, diversity, and independence in broadcasting. We are working to convince Congress and the FCC to remove existing barriers to the granting of low power FM radio licenses in urban areas, including Chicago. We hope you'll join the fight.

Public Input Seemingly Meaningless to FCC’s Media Ownership Review Process

A new study released by Penn State’s Institute for Information Policy criticizes the methods used by the FCC to organize their six public hearings on media ownership held throughout 2006-2007. Though the stated purpose of the hearings was to “fully involve” the public in a re-evaluation of the media ownership rules, Obar & Schejter argue that the FCC’s actions suggest that they had little interest in what the public had to say. Big business blocks the public from meeting with the FCC

Reporters from Savetheinternet.org found that Comcast – or someone who really likes Comcast – evidently bused in its own crowd of seat warmers to a February 2008 public hearing about net neutrality. Hundreds of citizens, many of whom had taken the day off of work, were turned away at the door and not allowed to speak their concerns in front of the FCC Commissioners. Low Power FM Leadership Days

CHIRP President Shawn Campbell and I recently participated in Low Power FM Leadership Days, organized by the Promethus Radio Project. We traveled to Washington, DC and spent two days on Capitol Hill. The first day was spent meeting with other LPFM advocates from around the country and exchanging ideas and experiences with groups as varied as music fans from Radio Free Nashville to Pascua Yaqui Tribe leaders who run a LPFM station on their reservation. We were energized and inspired by their struggles and successes, and hope to continue the friendships we started that day. The second day, the group spent the morning at the Federal Communications Commission, meeting with FCC staff about the challenges of LPFM radio. (more…)
