The Chicago Independent Radio Project is working to secure a broadcast license for a new community radio station in Chicago that is committed to local, independent programming, and generally furthering the causes of localism, diversity, and independence in broadcasting. We are working to convince Congress and the FCC to remove existing barriers to the granting of low power FM radio licenses in urban areas, including Chicago. We hope you'll join the fight.

Hey, hey, it’s record store day!

Posted by Shawn C. on April 19, 2008 around 12pm

Just a week after the CHIRP Record Fair and Other Delights, vinyl-loving folks across America are paying tribute to the local independent record store. It’s Record Store Day. Our good friends at Laurie’s Planet of Sound are celebrating with exclusive vinyl releases and Jon Langford bagging the goods behind the counter, while the cats and kittens at Permanent Records have live sets by Grand Ole Party and Purricane at 3, and the 2nd Annual Zaireeka Party later tonight at 7.

Of course the whole idea of Record Store Day isn’t just to serve your one-day jones for limited edition records and live music. The day is intended to remind music lovers that, no matter how convenient the iTunes store, Amazon.com, or any other online outlet, legal or illegal, is, it’s crucial to support the people whose passion for music led them to start the shops in our own neighborhoods. If we don’t, pretty soon, there won’t be any indie record stores left.

So there, you have permission — leave your computer, go outside, bike, drive, or walk to your favorite record store, and buy a bunch of rekkids (or CDs, DVDs, T-shirts, whatever you need). And don’t let it end today — if you value your local record store, help it to stay strong by indulging your music-buying needs at a brick and mortar shop whenever possible. Love your record store!
