Nothing like the music biz…

I just read Dan Kennedy’s book about working for Warner Music Group this weekend, and it’s simultaneously funny and depressing. The title ultimately ended up as ‘Rock On,’ but I’m more a fan of one of the names he listed in the appendix, ‘We Sit in Expensive Chairs, Guessing What Might Fascinate You.’
It’s not as if there’s anything surprising here for anyone who knows the direction the music business has taken over the past five years (or really the past decade or so), but Kennedy is a good storyteller, and the book is a quick read. And if, god forbid, you have the slightest inclination to go work for a major label, this should disabuse you of that notion quickly, if not sooner (uh-huh).
I’ve heard good things about this book as well, but have yet to read it, what with its UK-only availability and the damn weak dollar. From what I hear, this one’s a lot more bitter than Kennedy’s. I’m a sucker for these inside baseball accounts, so I’m sure I’ll get to this one eventually.
