Chicago Promoter’s Ordinance Tabled…but for how long?

The Chicago Promoter’s Ordinance has been tabled for now — but it will eventually make it to a vote in some form.
Thank you to everyone who contacted their alderman about this issue — but this is not the end of the effort. If you have not written to or called your alderman, you should still do so to make sure your opinions are heard. It’s especially important for aldermen to hear personal experiences from anyone who has thrown small shows in Chicago, or who has otherwise been involved in promoting (or even attending) smaller events.

Time Out Chicago reports that efforts from the Chicago music community made a big impact in stalling the law.
Chicagoist reports that the promoter’s ordinance has been tabled.
Also, here’s the latest from Jim DeRogatis
47th Ward alderman Eugene Schulter, whose License and Consumer Protection Committee passed the ordinance, had this to say in his newsletter to constituents:
“In my view, licensing promoters should serve to foster their creativity in creating unique events while ensuring that event attendees are protected. However, I want to ensure that the ordinance as it is finally passed does not place an undue burden on local musicians, young people breaking in to the music industry, or established venue owners. My committee will continue to work on these issues and will not present this legislation to the full City Council until a consensus between all of the parties involved has been has been achieved.”
If the council is indeed looking to achieve “a consensus between all parties,” it’s important that everyone’s voices be heard. Call and share your experiences with your alderman today. Be polite, and be sure to read the links above so you’re well-informed on the issues.
